Managing Maxine

I'm sitting in the friday night preview of my new show "Managing Maxine" at the Alliance Theater in Atlanta.

It's funny when you see a show so many times that you lose your perspective. Especially a comedy. Especially a world premiere comedy! The jokes that were once hilarious loose their edge UNTIL you get them in front of an audience, and they're born again!

I've been working on this show on and off for a few months now and 3 days ago, hours after I completed the music for it, my computer (and iMac) was stolen in a home invasion and I lost all my raw files.

I'm sitting here in the back row of the Alliance at the moment listening to the last things I wrote on that computer, and it's funny how much I miss it. Not the computer as much as those little pieces of creation.

All of this falls a little bit harder for me at the moment because (and this is JOYOUS news) Katie and I are PREGNANT! We're both walking around with more appreciation for the gift of life these days. I'm very thankful to not only take part in the creation of music, but also in the creation of a child. I wonder if the similarities stop there?

For those of you still interested, come and see "Managing Maxine" at the Alliance from Oct 15 - Nov 2, 2008.

Oh Canada!

I'm sitting in the Buffalo/Niagara airport at the moment. Katie and I are just finishing our 2008 summer vacation, this time to Chatauqua, Toronto and visiting some of the Canadian Kimes.

We had a great time! I've certainly learned more about where I come from. I learned that my great-great-grandfather was named Elijah Keim and he came from Germany, but nobody's sure where in Germany. Family history is fascinating. If you do it well you can really stitch together some pieces of who you are and who you might become!

Alas, the vacation is coming to a close, but it doesn't mean the fun has to. This weekend I'm giving a workshop on New Media at our church. You may not be able to tell from how much I update this blog, but I've been working pretty steadily as a website/podcast designer as of late. It's been a blast, and now I get to teach about it!

As for artistic ambitions. I continue the process of "Elektra/Soul" at Emory, and I'm looking forward to writing some music for "Managing Maxine" at the Alliance theater in a few months.

Before I sign off, I'd like to say Hi to our friend Betty who faithfully reads this blog all the way from Cambodia! Katie and I love you and miss you Betty!

peace

2008 Tanne Award

I'm incredibly proud to be among the artists honored by the Tanne Foundation in 2008.

Not much to say about this because I'm speechless. You can find out more HERE.

IRNE Award 2008

Hi everyone -

I've been a total flake when it comes to updating this blog. In the past few months I've had many adventures. Been to Palestine/Israel and made a film about it. IT can be seen HERE.

I'm having a ton of fun facing the challenges of filmmaking. It's a growing addiction...

Also, last week I won the Independant Reviewers of New England (IRNE) award for best composer/sound designer for my work on New Rep's production of "A Streetcar Named Desire." I won this award in 2004 as well and it's a huge compliment to be recognized along with the rest of the amazing artists who were both nominated and won. Streetcar also won for Best Supporting Actor, Best Set Design, Best Actress, Best Director AND Best Non-Musical Production. Pretty amazing!

Anyhow, here's a little bit of the score to jog your memory.

Into the Quarter:

Hopefully, I'll be less of a flake and write more soon. Til then, H
